Farming with: wife Angela
Working on: Bryanston silt/loam with 2900-2950 CHU
Strategy: To improve soil health we minimize disturbance to the soil ecosystem. To achieve this we have been no-tilling for 18 years and more recently eliminated insecticides and greatly reduced/eliminated fungicides. We’ve been working with a variety of cover crops over the years more recently focusing on overwintering cover crops, inter-seeding into corn and planting green (4 yrs now!) which includes a modified plant green system that terminates the cover on 30” centers with a hooded band sprayer.
What’s your goal?
Long term profitability through high yielding, healthy crops that are less dependent on pesticides etc. A healthy, balanced soil ecosystem is crucial to reaching that goal.
Where do you get information on this?
other farmers, IFAO events, OMAFRA staff, internet etc.
Only use an insecticide if absolutely necessary and be careful not to have to much tillage in your no-till system.
