I have been farming full-time since 2008. Farm with my brother, parents, Aunt/Uncle, and 7 full time employees. We crop about 600 acres apples, 500 acres sour cherries, 3000 acres corn/soy, 300 acres permanent pasture. We are building a flock of sheep and currently have about 550 breeding ewes. We have implemented high definition soil mapping on our farm. Basically made high definition provincial soil maps for our farms. We are using this information to access land capability, and make better long term decisions on our farms. We are also using these maps for variable rate; fertilization (liming, compost, potash/MAP, Nitrogen) and seeding. I hope long term to see correlation between soil type and insect/disease pressure. The biggest thing I have learned is that we need to identify and accept our soil types for what they are to best optimize their use. ie. Continuous corn on silt loam will produce high yields year after year, this program does not work on our heavy clays.
