I graduated from Fleming College's Sustainable Agriculture program in 2013. Over the last 5 years I have interned & worked on farms, have rented land and run my own market garden, and was hired to start Sudbury's first Urban Farm in 2017. Over the last three years I have also developed educational programming in urban agriculture with two community health centres in both Atikameksheng Anishnabek & Serpent River First Nation. In addition, I have been hired to deliver hands-on workshops in beginner permaculture and forest gardening, and was part of the installation of a 4000 square foot Food Forest in a public park in Sudbury. In 2019 I will be mentoring other youth in a collective farm initiative on rented land outside of Sudbury, and will be offering assistance to an urban farming initiative starting up in Sheguindah on Manitoulin Island. Practicing ecological farming techniques is the focus of my work, and agroecology is a new passion of mine. I hope to continue learning more about soil from season to season, and educating all people, especially young people and new growers, about the web of life that allows for our food system to exist. Starting Sudbury's first urban farm from scratch was a challenge I accepted with great enthusiasm. I knew I had my work cut out for me, as the site chosen for the farm was an underutilized green space near a social housing complex in downtown Sudbury. It was essentially a low-fertility lawn when I began. Two full dump-trucks fof triple mix were added to the site, as were various certified organic soil amendments, and extra compost from a local fish operation. Our food grew beautifully. A similar process took place when installing the food forest, and the other urban ag gardens in the Anishnabek communities. In each place, we were starting from scratch and rehabilitating low-fertility green spaces by amending with certified organic minerals, compost, triple mix, and leaving growing strips for clover and other N fixers/beneficial plants to remain. The majority of this knowledge I have applied has come from my education at Fleming relating to soil, and hands on experience interning and working on farms, as well as attending various farm-conferences throughout the year.
