I have been full time on the farm since graduating college in 2005, but have worked on the farm my whole life. Along with my father we cash crop and custom farm approx 4000 ac. Our main crops are corn, soybeans, wheat, cover crops and every few years oats. As majority of our landbase is on heavy clay soils, red clover has been a part of our rotation for overu 50 years to help improve the clay. We have no till soybeans and wheat since the early 80’s and a minimum till program for corn. 5 years ago we started looking at options to reduce our tillage even more. Through that we have started using multi species cover crops that allow us to no till soybeans into them the following spring (some of our heaviest ground we do not grow corn on, it’s a soy/wheat/cover crop rotation). We have also done away with full surface tillage and in our second year of strip tilling corn. We have witnessed the health of our soils, the natural drainage, crop health all improve. By changing the way we do things we are making the farm sustainable for the next generation (I have 2 kids as of now that someday hopefully want to carry on the family business).
