I have been farming all my life on a 4th generation farm. I Began farming my own land in 1990. I now farm with my wife Stacey, my son Wes and a full time employee. We operate Weslane Farms Inc. Currently we operate around 1000 acres of corn, soybeans, wheat, and sweetcorn. We do not have livestock but we have a nutrient management agreement with a neighbor to trade our wheat straw for dry dairy manure which we apply to our wheat stubble every summer along with a cover crop. Our rotation is typically no-till wheat, then minimum till corn, then no till soybeans and back to wheat. When I graduated from the University of Guelph, I began to bring my learnings back to our farm. My involvement in the Lambton Soil and Crop Improvement Association in the early 90's also helped me make a lot of changes to our farm practices. We have been working in a minimum-till/ no-till program since the 90's. A good rotation, cover crops and use of manure has helped to sustain our soil structure. I have taken hills out of production and have put permanent cover in these areas.
