I have been in agriculture since 2003 as an advisor and salesperson for crop inputs. My husband and I bought a farm from his father in 2012. And we added to our acreage in 2016. We are now cropping 250 ac for cash crops like corn, soybeans, fall wheat & canola. We have about 12 ac at our house that used to be a cattle feedlot. My husband wanted to clean up the scrubby brush that has grown up over the last 20 years it has been abandonned but didn't want livestock as large as cattle. With 2 young children he wanted to keep things as safe as possible for them to be around. So he bought a small herd of goats in the late fall 2017. We are now up to 10 does, 1 buck and 2 doelings and growing. They have done a fantastic job cleaning up the undergrowth around the house to bring it back into useable ground. We have a sloping topography in our farm that leads to a municipal ditch as the lowest point. We also receive a fair bit of water from the highway above our farm. It is important to us to preserve the ground and reduce erosion as much as possible. We did some systematic drainage this year to reduce the overland flow. We have worked with the township to clear the ditches around our property to maximize their use as water collection from the surrounding ground. There is work yet to be done. We are looking into drainage improvements for our other property that also borders on 2 municipal ditches. We use conservation tillage or no till when possible. We have not had much success incorporating many cover crops into our rotation due to the short season after corn & soybeans, but winter wheat after canola works well.
