I have been farming since I was able to walk, starting with chores and moving onto field work. Currently I run a cash crop and custom farming operation with my brother, and parents, although they have taken the back seat and are working towards retiring. We crop 1000 of our own acres, with a corn, bean, wheat and hay rotation, and started using cover crops in the last 5 years. Our custom work business is the larger of our operations though, where we manage roughly 6000 acres, from planting to harvest. We don't have livestock anymore. We are trying to transition to a no-till, strip-till tillage practice on our own ground, including cover crops where they fit in. As we are becoming more aware of soil issues, our customers, paying attention to what we are practicing, are also becoming more aware. Typically after wheat, almost all acres are planted into a Cover crop, then we strip till in the fall, and plant into strips in the spring. Also most of our beans are minimum or no tilled in. We are learning that patience is easily talked about, but hard to practice, resulting in some crop failures. But we see the advantages of using cover crops and reducing tillage, as a way to increase our soil health, reducing our dependence on commercial fertilizer and pesticides.
