I've been farming with my parents since I graduated university in 2008. More recently I've been farming with my wife Christine for 2 years as we start up our own operation along side the family farm. In South Dundas we struggle with crop rotation as we are in an interesting lake effected region that doesn't play well with wheat. As a result we tend to favour corn and are moving to a 50:50 corn:soy rotation. We've transitioned away from full tillage to a no-til beans strip till corn program that is working well. We historically have had a beef feed lot but with the terrible financial position feedlots are facing in this cycle we have opted to empty the barns and wait it out...feels weird not having animal! Since having an ahah moment in 2011 I've been on the road to no-til and cover crops. This year I'm proud to say we will have the least amount of tillage to do ever and have over 50% of our farm planted to a cover crop. Long way to go but it is a work in progress. I've really spear headed interseeding cover crops into post VT corn on our farm and have had some great success with establishment ahead of soybeans. Most of my focus has been in this regard as stated above wheat is a challenging crop for us with extreme fusarium pressure. Without wheat the dare I say easy cover crop coctails many are playing with aren't really possible when you only start cleaning fields off in the end of September.
