Norfolk County
I have been farming for over 30 years. My wife and I, along with our three children farm on the sand plains of Norfolk County. Our main crop is potatoes, grown for the fresh market. We also grow and sell asparagus at the farm gate. Our crop rotation has evolved over the past decade to include various species of cover crops. Our focus being biofumigation with mustard and pearl millet. We currently crop approximately 700 acres. Our livestock is a few horses pasturing on our home farm. More than a decade ago our farm made a commitment to improving soil health. We realized just as equipment needed annual maintenance so did our soil. Through research, trial and error and remembering the practices of our grandparents we have made some exciting discoveries and seen vast improvements in our soil structure. Earthworms are once again calling our soil home! Crop yields and quality have improved and we've been able to reduce the need for commercial fertilizers and pesticides. We feel that this is just the beginning of what there is to be learned.
