grew my first crop 25 years ago.angela and i farm approx.800 acres. our main crops are corn, dry beans, wheat and soybeans.minor crops include buckwheat,hairy vetch,sunflowers,redclover seed etc. grew my first crop 25 years ago.angela and i farm approx.800 acres. our main crops are corn, dry beans, wheat and soybeans.minor crops include buckwheat,hairy vetch,sunflowers,redclover seed etc. the biggest improvement to our soil began when we eliminated tillage in1998.we continue to grow all our crops with zero tillage even removing tillage coulters from the planter.Wehave seen significant improvements in soil organic matter,soil structure,soil life etc. we have used cover crops after wheat in the past and are working toward having living roots 365 days a year on all acres. this will be our 3rd year of planting green on some acres. recently quite using insecticides and nearly all fungicides. (2-3 years).we are also incorporating some biological insect control. There are several factors that got us started down this path. here are a few. current system (tillage) was not sustainable,economics, a bus tour to Don Lobb s farm in the early 90`s,etc.
